Known for its rich flavors, homemade quality, and nostalgic atmosphere, Benky’s has become a South Dakota staple.

On our first day in Rapid City, we decided to check it out and see if it lived up to its reputation. Here’s our full review.

Benky’s Ice Cream has a timeless, welcoming feel. The exterior reflects its long-standing history, with a classic ice cream shop look that immediately gives off a nostalgic charm. Inside, the shop is simple but inviting, with a focus on quality ice cream and friendly service. The menu is straightforward, featuring traditional flavors, sundaes, and classic milkshakes.

The Ice Cream Selection

Benky’s offers a variety of flavors, ranging from timeless classics to a few unique, locally inspired options. Some of the highlights include:

  • Vanilla Bean – Smooth, creamy, and packed with real vanilla flavor.
  • Black Hills Blackberry – A refreshing, slightly tart flavor that’s perfect for a hot day.
  • South Dakota Salted Caramel – A rich, sweet caramel base with a touch of salt for balance.
  • Homemade Butter Pecan – A creamy, nutty flavor with crunchy pecan pieces.
  • Classic Chocolate – A deep, indulgent chocolate with a smooth texture.

Taste Test: What We Tried

Black Hills Blackberry

This flavor was light, fruity, and refreshing. The blackberry taste was authentic, not overly sweet, with just the right amount of tartness. The texture was smooth and creamy, making it a standout option for those who enjoy fruit-based ice creams.

South Dakota Salted Caramel

This was a perfect balance of sweet and salty. The caramel flavor was rich, with a buttery undertone, while the hint of salt brought out the depth of flavor. It was smooth, creamy, and packed with flavor without being overpowering.

Homemade Butter Pecan

A true classic, this flavor delivered on everything you’d expect from a great butter pecan ice cream. The pecan pieces were fresh and crunchy, complementing the creamy, buttery base. It had a homemade feel that made it one of our favorites.

Atmosphere and Service

Benky’s is a family-run business, and that warmth is reflected in the service. The staff was friendly and welcoming, happy to share recommendations and provide generous scoops. The atmosphere was relaxed, making it a great spot to take a break while exploring the area.

Is It Worth Visiting?

The quality of the ice cream, the friendly service, and the nostalgic charm make it a standout experience.
